Vol 8 No 12 10th December 2007

THE EDITOR’S SPARK

Hi Friends,
Very recently, the SQUIB got hold of a very serious petition written against the Honourable Justice Adetula Alabi, the Chief Judge of Lagos State to the National Judicial Council.

The authors of the said petition are the leaders of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Lagos State Branch, sacked about eighteen months ago from the Lagos State Judiciary.

Are they merely belly-aching against the Chief Judge or is there merit in their allegations against the Chief Judge? That’s a question that the NJC would have to decide, but there are reasons to believe that this petition has opened a new vista of engagement between the Chief Judge and the sacked workers.

We have two guests in the house today. Both are Professors of Law. The first is the prolific Squib Professor of Law, Adewale Ademola Esq. The second is Professor Itse Sagay S.A.N. ‘Professor’ Adewale Ademola’s piece is entitled - 'New Law School Fees, A Critical Appraisal'(http://www.squibguest.blogspot.com), while Professor Sagay’s contribution is a continuation of his address delivered at the recent NBA Ikorodu Law Week which we started publishing last week.

All your other Sweet Regulars - The Learned Squib (http://www.learnedsquib.blogspot.com), Readers’ Pavilion(http://www.squibreaderspavilion.blogspot.com), Monitor, Diary(http://www.squiblogg.blogspot.com) and Case Law, save, the Cartoons and Book Excerpts are intact. Needless to say, you’ll find them ‘tasty’ as usual.

THE EDITOR’S SPARK

Hi friend,

Just a few weeks ago, some senior magistrates of the Lagos State Judiciary landed in Philadelphia in the United States of America. They were there to attend a Female Judge’ Conference, only for them to return home and find themselves in soup with their boss, Honourable Justice Adetula Alabi, the Chief Judge of Lagos State.

Of course you’ll like to know the reason for the Chief Judge’s displeasure and whether his lordship was right in dealing with the affected magistrates. Please find out the answers in our cover story pages: (

Last month, the Ikorodu branch of the Nigerian Bar Association held her 3rd Chief B.O. Benson SAN Annual Lecture as well as her Annual Bar Dinner. We serve you in this edition, some pictures of the two events as well as the paper presented by Professor Itse Sagay SAN at the Chief B.O.Benson SAN Annual Lecture. The learned Professor is our guest this week. Needless to say, you will enjoy his rich fare.
